I’ve always been involved in a lot of various projects. Among the disparaging collection of roles I play I am the convenor of the Australian Library and Information Association’s (ALIA) Hunter region group. Over the last few weeks ALIA Hunter has been involved in organising the Newcastle Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Symposium, and I’m pleased to report the event, held today, was a huge success. The SDG’s are a set of 17 goals set by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015, and today’s symposium focused on how the GLAMR industry in Newcastle can help achieve these goals.
I am pictured here with the other organisers and several of the guest speakers; ALIA NSW State Manager Sally Turbitt, Christopher Woodthrope from the United Nations, Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes, President Elect of IFLA Christine Mackenzie, ALIA CEO Sue McKerracher, Newcastle deputy Lord Mayor Declan Clausen and Alex Mills, Community Programs and Partnership Manager for Newcastle Libraries.
One of the 17 goals set by the United Nations is quality education, and the issue of libraries reaching out to help educate prisoners was unexpectedly raised by one of the guest speakers. I approached them afterwards about a couple ideas and wheels have been set in motion. Always good to network and build bridges; watch this space.
